Big Writing
I like our Big Write because we get to improve our writing and get lots of praise in our feedback!

Bethan, Year 5.

What is Big Writing?

It is a new approach to writing which was originally devised by Ros Wilson. (A former teacher and Ofsted Inspector). Here at OLQOH we have taken it and adapted it to suit our school and our children.
Children are encouraged to Talk about their writing, finding exciting 'wow' words to use in their writing. Children are also encouraged to have a go at using interesting examples of punctuation, sentences starters and connectives within an extended writing period called 'The Big Write.' Children write for an extended period of time working closely with their targets to produce their best writing. Then the following lesson, through detailed feedback children understand what they need to do next to improve, and respond to feedback to make their work better.

What can you do at home to help?

  • Encourage your children to READ at home, at least 4 or 5 times a week.
  • Encourage your children to TALK about their writing, this is the first stage of becoming a successful writer.
  • Encourage your children to spot WOW words and perhaps write them down in a book at home or on a piece of paper.
  • Encourage your children to borrow words or phrases which they like from books, magazines, television programmes.
  • Encourage your children to WRITE at home.
  • ASK your child what target they have to improve their writing this half-term.
