Geography

Through our Geography curriculum, we aim to nurture children's natural curiosity about the world and their connection to it. Building on prior knowledge, learners are encouraged to explore ideas, question, observe, take risks, solve problems, and be inspired within meaningful contexts.

Geography is the study of places and the relationships between people and their environments. We focus on developing children's knowledge of physical and human geography in their local area, the UK, and the wider world, equipping them with the skills to navigate and explore the world.

Using Cornerstones Education, we deliver units that build progressively on skills throughout Primary education. Our intent is to expand these essential skills to stimulate curiosity, independence, and motivation.

We emphasise fostering children's interest, respect, and understanding of diverse places, people, and environments, alongside a deep understanding of Earth's physical and human processes.

At Our Lady’s Queen of Heaven, we aim to develop inquisitive Geographers who have a sense of wonder about the world. They will gain insight into the challenges facing our planet and appreciate their role in contributing to a sustainable future.

National Curriculum Aims

The national curriculum for geography aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • develop contextual knowledge of the location of globally significant places – both terrestrial and marine – including their defining physical and human characteristics and how these provide a geographical context for understanding the actions of processes
  • understand the processes that give rise to key physical and human geographical features of the world, how these are interdependent and how they bring about spatial variation and change over time
  • are competent in the geographical skills needed to:
    • collect, analyse and communicate with a range of data gathered through experiences of fieldwork that deepen their understanding of geographical processes
    • interpret a range of sources of geographical information, including maps, diagrams, globes, aerial photographs and Geographical Information Systems (GIS)
    • communicate geographical information in a variety of ways, including through maps, numerical and quantitative skills and writing at length

We believe in quality teaching and learning. The aim for our learners is to have a fully encompassing creative curriculum, which engages their imagination and encourages the next steps in their learning. Our subjects are planned in Learning Topics and, wherever possible, seek to involve the learners and their interests in planning.
