At Our Lady Queen of Heaven, our definition of progress in Computing is the widening and deepening of essential knowledge, skills, understanding and learning behaviours. We design, organise and plan our curriculum to ensure that learners are not merely covering content, but achieving a depth to their learning that enables them to use their skills and understanding in all areas of the curriculum.

Our careful curriculum planning means that we include frequent opportunities for repetition and practise to ensure that essential knowledge, understanding and skills are developed in every subject. Our design gives learners time to revisit previous learning, allowing them to gradually develop a deeper understanding of the skills and processes within subjects at their own pace and in the best possible way for each individual child.

Our curriculum is meticulously designed and planned to move the learner's thinking to a higher order, deep level of understanding, rather than simply acquiring facts and knowledge.

The Computing Curriculum at Our Lady’s is shaped to prepare our learners to be confident and competent within a world that is heavily shaped by technology. 

We recognise that our learners are using technology on a daily basis at home, therefore at school and within our curriculum, we aim to develop knowledge, understanding and confidence to ensure our children go through education and beyond being able to apply the computing skills they have learnt in everyday situations. 

We intend for our learners to develop their speaking and listening skills, within the computing curriculum, by using a range of different software where children of all ages can find, analyse and present information and further evaluate their presentations. 

We aim to develop independent learners who are fluent in their understanding of computer science by teaching them how to use a range of programs where they are able to design, create and evaluate their work using specific vocabulary. 

Throughout all aspects of our computing curriculum, we strive to ensure our learners are continuously taught and understand the importance of safe internet use during computing lessons. In every year group, E-Safety is a key focus and we are proud that a vast majority of our learners have the knowledge and understanding of how to stay safe online. We promote the importance of using technology safely and respectfully by ensuring all of our learners have access to appropriate teaching and resources to enhance their learning. 

At Our Lady’s, our  ambition for our learners, is for them to leave us continuing to build on their digital literacy and being able to safely use technology; developing their ideas through information and communication technology, which they will be able to apply to their further education and future career to become masters of technology in the rapidly changing digital world. 

National Curriculum Aims:

The national curriculum for computing aims to ensure that all pupils:

• can understand and apply the fundamental principles and concepts of computer science, including abstraction, logic, algorithms and data representation
• can analyse problems in computational terms, and have repeated practical experience of writing computer programs in order to solve such problems
• can evaluate and apply information technology, including new or unfamiliar technologies, analytically to solve problems
• are responsible, competent, confident and creative users of information and communication technology
